GENERAL INFORMATION: There is a disability program for which an alien resident may qualify. The program is entitled "Supplemental Security Income" or "SSI". The SSI program pays monthly benefits to persons who are age 65 and older, or blind, or who have a disabling condition which prevents them from working, and who have a low income. To qualify for SSI you must meet the above requirements and you must also be a resident of the United States and either a citizen, a national, or an alien with a lawful right to reside permanently in the United States.
HOW TO APPLY FOR SSI DISABILITY BENEFITS: To apply for SSI disability benefits, you may contact any Social Security office by phone and a Social Security representative will schedule a telephone interview with you to obtain the information needed to file your application for benefits. While an attorney is not required to apply for SSI benefits and in fact cannot file your application for you, the Bartels Law Firm stands ready to assist you just as soon as you have completed your telephone interview with the Social Security office.
